Ooh a 7th generation hybrid. I forgot these were a thing . IIRC Honda only pairs the hybrid motor with the V6 and positioned it as the top of the of the line Accord and basically nobody bought it.

Yeah I do vaguely remember that actually... but how and why was it the official Indy Safety Car?!?

I remember that around that time Honda became the sole engine provider in IndyCar after the others - Chevy and someone else I don’t remember - dropped out . That probably meant they got to do the safety car (or were the only ones interested in it as tie-in advertising to being the engine provider). I assume they picked the hybrid Accord simply to advertise the hybrid.  In my head they did this after preparing an awesome lowered Ridgeline safety car that some boring line manager axed.

Toyota was the third one. It was odd that they dropped out because IIRC both Penske and Ganassi used them at the time.

Hybrid accord was seriously quick for its time. Great car, basically a car version of gm hybrid truck, more power with slight uptick in fuel economy.

My parents used to have one, and it was the fastest V6 Accord offered at the time. It was mildly interesting, but in most real world use it didn’t return better mileage than a non-hybrid V6. It did a bit better around ABQ where there was enough stopping and starting for the regenerative braking to charge the batteries and the assist motor would help out off the line. On the highway, any combination of a full load of people and luggage, wind or climbing hills constantly tanked mileage into the mid 20's at best. Under Western US interstate conditions with more than one person in it, once the battery used up most of the charge the hybrid system just seemed to be a whole bunch of extra weight the car was lugging around. The downhill side of canyons and hills never seemed to be enough to really charge up the battery much.

It had the check engine light come on about 1,000 miles before the 60k power train warranty was up. It got new catalytic converters and some parts related to the assist motor, and then they promptly traded it in (for a 2014 Accord coupe, in bright red).
